Hey Shingle People!
Happy Valentines Day!
I’m so so very excited about today’s guest on the podcast.
Desiree and I go way back, we went to law school together and were clinic (Clinic is when law students represent low-income clients in the community for free – as a way to get practical experience before graduating) partners. I always knew there was something special about her – she had this chic New York City “thing” about her.
Well, Desiree is making waves in the Black beauty industry. In 2015, Desiree decided to follow her dream and opened Vivrant Beauty, “Harlem’s newest beauty retail experience with a vast selection of skincare, haircare and cosmetic products catering to women of all skin tones, nationalities and hair textures.”
Such an amazing idea and a breath of fresh air in the revived Harlem neighborhood. Vivrant Beauty is one of the nation’s only beauty boutiques that specifically caters to women of color. Desiree and Vivrant Beauty have received reviews from Black Enterprise, InStyle Magazine, the New York Times, Vogue, Essence and many more.
Desiree and I talk about how she transformed her idea from her moleskins to her amazing store. We also delve into how you used her corporate law experience to create a compelling business plan complete with financial projections that helped her obtain a business loan for her store.
We also talk about the obstacles of being an entrepreneur, going through the loan process and dealing with mostly white men who had no idea about the concept of her store and how running a brick and mortar location differs from running her online business.
You can find Vivrant Beauty on Facebook and Instagram.
